Townsend Test Prep

Sophomore students interested in becoming National Merit students would be best served linking up with Townsend Test Prep, the Cincinnati, OH area's leading test preparation service.

Our Scholar Program strives to achieve maximum results for the upper 1% of students. We combine our proven test preparation with a new format to make a very special course for very special students.

In the three years we have offered this format, nearly 80% of our students have reached at least National Merit Scholar Semifinalist! Some students have raised their Selection Index by as much as 42 points!

What Is The Merit Scholar Course?

  • Townsend Merit Scholar Course uses the same strategies, review, and practice that we use in our upper level "Ultimate" course, but we have changed the course format to meet the specific needs of sophomore students with high PSAT scores

How Does It Work?

  • Sophomores who meet the requirements for the course (minimum 180 on the Soph. PSAT) will meet individually with a Townsend instructor three times in the Spring or Summer. During the summer, students will be evaluated, taught Townsend PSAT strategies and be given a course of self-study. The small group Merit Scholar Class will then meet four times in the fall of their junior year to finish their preparation for the most difficult questions on the PSAT (they will also prepare for the ACT). They will then be able to take the SAT and the ACT anytime during their junior year.

I Thought The PSAT Was Just Practice, Why Is It So Important?

  • The actual name of this test is the PSAT/NMSQT — The Pre-SAT or The National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. For the best students, it can be more important than the SAT because of the many scholarships that are dependent on it. The PSAT is the sole determining factor for becoming a National Merit Semi-finalist (90% of these students become Finalists). Finalists are eligible for full scholarships at many colleges; they are virtually guaranteed admission to many very selective colleges; they are often recruited for college honors programs

What About The SAT And ACT ?

  • The new SAT is almost identical to the PSAT. The only differences are the length and the essay writing section, so students in the course will be ready for the SAT. Our practice test is actually a combination of the PSAT and SAT. In the fall, we also prepare the students for their ACT (we recommend they take both the SAT and ACT)

Who Qualifies For The Townsend Merit Scholar Course?

  • Sophomores with a PSAT selection index of 180 or above. There are some exceptions such as if a student was sick, mis-marked his answer sheet or had an abnormally low score. Call for information if you think your student would be an exception. Also, only students willing to do ALL of the homework and participate fully in the classes should apply.
